Automation earns its keep only when a red build means a real bug. The moment developers start re-running failed pipelines 'to see if it passes this time', the suite has lost its authority.
Test behaviour, not structure
Select elements by role and accessible name rather than CSS classes or generated IDs. Tests written this way survive redesigns and double as accessibility checks.
Keep the pyramid honest
- Many fast unit tests for logic
- A layer of API and integration tests around services
- A thin set of end-to-end journeys covering what a customer actually does
Own your test data
Most flakiness comes from shared, drifting test data. Seed what each test needs and clean it up. It is more code up front and far less debugging later.
Make failures readable
Screenshots, traces and clear assertion messages turn a failed run into a five-minute fix instead of an afternoon of guessing.
A test nobody trusts is a cost, not an asset.
