Two estimates for the same project can differ by half, and both can be honest. The difference is usually what each one assumes. A good estimate makes those assumptions visible.
What we always include
- A list of features in scope, and a list explicitly out of scope
- Assumptions about content, integrations and access to your team
- Testing, deployment and hand-over as line items, not hidden in development
- A contingency and what would trigger using it
What an estimate cannot do
It cannot predict requirements that do not exist yet. That is why we work in phases and re-estimate at each one, rather than promising a single number for a year of work.
